Resolution New You #30 - Date your spouse!

The honeymoon doesn't have to be over.  We just have to TRY harder and get creative to bring the romance back to the surface.  So the last resolution in January 2009, is to plan a date with your spouse.  Pretend like they are your boyfriend or girlfriend again and not the person who is supposed to deal with you.
For instance:  ladies, if you were dating, would you let your guy see you wearing sweats and t-shirts all day while sitting in front of the computer?  When he went to give you a kiss, did you turn your head so he can kiss your cheek, just so you didn't have to stop what you were doing on the computer.  Or men, do you seriously think she would have married you if you burped and farted as much as you do now.  Seriously, take it out of her area.
I don't know why, but many of us take advantage that the other will always be there.  And we don't make them feel "special",  like we did when we dated.
February's blogs focus is 30 days of...GREAT DATES.  I hope you stay tuned and actually arrange special dates for your spouse throughout the year.  Also for the wives and want-to-be wives, pick up the book, The proper care and feeding of husbands, by Dr. Laura.   I believe this book should be a requirement in schools and any woman who embraces the general concept of the book, will unleash the power and qualities we women possess.
You can win a FREE copy of this book.  Simply comment below, and post a special date you arranged for your significant other.  At the end of the month, readers will vote.  If your date gets the highest vote, you will win!

Resolution New You #29 - Finish what you start! A FREE GIVEAWAY!

Sometimes I wish I had OCD. Or the word fear was taken out of the dictionary and out of our lives. If this happened,  I might not leave projects unfinished, and I would finish what I start.  Well 9 years ago, I started Beobi.  At first, it started out as a video for preschoolers, teaching them their ABC's and first words in an indirect way. Real children and babies playing with everyday colorful objects put to simple childlike music.  An animated story is featured at the end of the video to keep storytime in their lives.  I came across hurdle after hurdle during the process and gained appreciation for what really goes on behind the scenes on any production, with pre-production being the most important!
I did finish the video which is what my goal was. Then the 7 year tornado occurred.
People told me, get this on TV, sell this to stores.  Disney, PBS and Nickelodean need new characters that are cute and nice.  The positive feedback I received from parents who said their kids loved Beobi, the book and the video encouraged me to do more. A Tv show they wanted, a tv show it is.  I aim to please.  It took me 1 year to create the series Beobi and the Magic Coloring Book.  In every story, Beobi, Jazzica, Class and Bluezy meet a child in the library who is coloring in a magic coloring book. The monkeys and the child jump into the coloring book and go on new adventures. The illustrations appear as if they are in a coloring book.
I pitched the series to a local PBS station. They had interest in making the pilot.  That is when the fear set in. (To me, fear is the worst word in the english language.)  Instead of raising the money to create the pilot I envisioned, I thought it would be easier to put the animation into my already existing products and unknowingly entered the world of manufacturing.  I worked with companies oversees, designed packaging and display cases for my products.  (Do you remember at the beginning of my story when I said, all I wanted to do was create a video?) My simple idea of making a video with a story to partner it and great music, turned into me trying to create a global product, by myself.
After the "product" was ready to be sold to stores and I did everything everybody told me to do, I submitted it to the buyers.  They presented a new hurdle for me to jump.  Their response was, "Ms. Cohn, Beobi is a wonderful concept and you should be proud of your product line. However, in our stores we need products that sell themselves.  May we suggest starting a marketing campaign or getting a television show."
I was right back where I was before I made my decision based on fear and chose the "easier" path. I have learned so many lessons from my experience with Beobi.  Mostly, stay true to who you are, what you believe in and have a passion for.  Do not do what others tell you to do unless they actually have experience doing it.  Also, share and connect with people and don't try and do everything on your own.
I have a passion for engaging children with wholesome creative activities to help them learn.  So this year in 2009, I am going to focus on what I originally started and share Beobi with kids just for the sake of sharing Beobi with kids.
Reply to this post with your words of encouragement, your experience with Beobi, or a personal fear you have had to overcome, and I will send you a Beobi Storytime Value Set, which includes a coloring book, DVD/CROM, 2 picture books, and a plush toy.  It really is a great gift for children 1-4 years old and it is FREE - from me.
In conclusion, I have to thank so many people for helping me in the beginning.  First and foremost, my two partners (Helene and Katy) who filmed the video with me and did every role in production from puppeteer to craft services.  To the parents who brought their kids over to film and dealt with my poor directing abilities.  Also, to the parents who arranged for me to come to their house and let me read the story to the neighborhood kids as well as told others about it.  Lastly to my husband. Thank you. I love you.  I know how hard this has been and you are always so supportive and encouraging.  I vow, I will finish what I started.

Resolution New You #28 - Throw a party

Live For Today...Plan For Tomorrow...Party Tonight!
A party is a time to get together, relax and have fun while enjoying great food, drinks and music! More importantly it is about being with the people you love.  Actually throwing the party establishes great skills to be a better new you, for there is an art to party planning.  It requires creativity (picking a theme), leadership (gathering the guests), organization (arranging the details), and hospitality (you want them to stay, don't you?)
In 2009, plan three parties for no reason other than to get together and celebrate!  If you are looking for a theme, simply go to evite.com, and look at the events you can plan.  Then, go to the best website/blog on this world wide web and check out tips from the Hostess with the Mostess, Jennifer Sbranti. Her ideas, style and creativity will inspire you to garnish and decorate whatever you can to suit your theme.  I used to fold my paper towels in half figuring it was just a napkin.  Why waste the time?  But a napkin wrapped with a necklace, as Jennifer shows us in her new Morrocon theme, will get people talking. And they will be talking about how great you did!  And hearing how great you are, will always make you be a better you.
Start planning a party for THE better new you in 2009.
One tip: Never be the first to arrive at a party or the last to go home and never, never be both. ~ David Brown

Resolution New You #27 - Play the same game as Buffet and Gates do

I have been in a bunko group for 10 years now.  The game itself is, boring, repetitive, and unstimulating - to me.  The reasons I stay? Easy.  My friends are fun, spontaneous, and energizing. However in the 10 years we have been together, I have encouraged them to switch to poker, and possibly bridge.  The bridge subculture is diverse and not comprised of the stereotypical little old ladies we imagine.  Bums, brainiacs, and billionaires (Bill Gates and Warren Buffet) fill up local bridge clubs, national tournaments, and online bridge parlors. Learning to play bridge or poker will allow you to match wits and witicisms with the people in your life.  Plus you might win some dinero.
All the two games need are good judgement, the ability to focus, or simply the ability to carry a straight face and pretend like your the wisest person at the table.  In the end, the cards will determine your fate.
To learn the basics of poker, go to www.pokkercards.com.  Or simply watch some games being played on tv.

Resolution New You #26 - Wash away the process of aging

There are so many theories and opinions on whether or not makeup left on your skin overnight causes us to age.  Have you heard the one stating, for every night you go to bed with your makeup on, you are aging yourself one day?   So I did the calculation.  I figured if I didn't remove my makeup just once during the week, since the age of 16-years-old, I have already added 3 years to my looks.  (Aaagh - I am screaming because I know once a week is being very conservative.)
In doing research for this blog on what is best, I honestly couldn't find hard facts to prove it one way or the other.  In fact, many opinions stated that washing your face too much will remove the precious oils that we need in our skin.

The scientific reasons we age are listed below:
Collagen production slowing (collagen contributes to skin's firmness)
Elastin production decreases (elastin contributes to skin's elasticity)
Fat cells begin to disappear (which can lead to sagging skin)
Your skin losing its ability to retain moisture
Frown lines and "crow's feet" appearing due to small muscle contractions
Dead skin cells not being shed as quickly
Slightly less turnover of new skin cells

In other words - GENETICS is the main key to how we age.  But, even though I believe in the science of skin, my proof is how I feel in the morning when I wake up without makeup on my face. I feel better and more beautiful.  So that is resolution enough for me to wash my face every night.
Now my problem is: what is the best cleanser?

Resolution New You #25 - Do 40 push-ups a day

It's said the push-up is a great indicator of good health since it uses many major muscle groups. It's the do-anywhere exercise that requires nothing other than your own body weight.  Yet for many people, they're so darn hard to do. Me included.
According to a NYT article, the average 40-year-old woman should be able to perform 16 push-ups, and the average man of the same age should be able to do 27.  These statistics are according to using the proper form of a push-up and not the knee-down method.

I just tried it and accomplished 10 - barely.  I have a lot of work to do.
So try it with me.  How many can you do today?

My goal is 40 becuase that is how many Kelly Ripa said she does a day and her arms look great!

Resolution New You #24 - Learn to speak a new language!

English is a funny language. How else can we explain why we park our car on the driveway and drive our car on the parkway?  Or, skating on thin ice can get you into hot water.  And how can a fat chance and a slim chance mean the same thing?  If that doesn't convince you to learn a new language to be a better new you, then take this quote by Martin H. Fischer, "Any man who does not make himself proficient in at least two languages other than his own is a fool. " So below is one phrase that should be universally understood.  It is written in a few of the most popular languages spoken throughout the world. Would you know what to do if someone said it to you?
Χρειάζομαι τα τρόφιμα
Ik heb voedsel nodig
Ich benötige Nahrung
Ho bisogno dell'alimento
Eu preciso o alimento
Мне нужна еда
J'ai besoin de nourriture
Necesito la comida
I need food.

Resolution New You #23 - Be spontaneous!

One way to be a better you in the new year is to disregard all your "big" plans and be spontaneous - at least for a day!  It is best to share the adventure with someone you love.
So trust your gut instinct and let all inhibitions go.  Do not worry about the kids missing 1 day of school. Instead of dropping them off, take them to Disneyland for the day.  Instead of going to sleep in your bed, pitch a tent in the backyard and camp outside.  Instead of eating dinner at the table, make a picnic on the floor.  Start a food fight.  Dance after dinner.  Go to a movie at lunch time.  Whatever you do that is spontaneous and not your typical routine, it will be remembered by those who share the experience with you.
We are so busy trying to make our life work out the way we plan, we are often disappointed when it doesn't go exactly as we want.  The solution:  let God oversee the big picture he has planned for you, while you live every minute with passion, freedom and fun - at least for a day! (I know I already said that but I realize this is a tough economy and I don't want to be responsible for getting you fired.)

See our latest spontaneous day...we played hookie from school and work to find Adam Lambert.  It was a day we will always remember, even though it didn't go exactly as planned.

Resolution New You #22 - Walk the walk, 4 times a year

The benefits of walking have been proven over and over again.  We know it is good for us.  We know it makes us feel better after we do it.  We know 15 minutes a day is supposed to curb your urge for eating that chocolate you don't need. But why don't we do it? You can not blame it on facebook.  (I already tried and they accept no responsibility.)
One way to enjoy walking more is to make yourself a great imix of songs.  At iTunes, Nike has some sport mixes that are suitable to all music tastes.
Another, go through your calendar and ink it with at least 4 walkathons this year. Walkathons benefit you in two ways: first, it's exercise and second, they usually support a charity. You help your body AND soul by participating in a walkathon.  Add friends to the mix and you will be satisfied on all levels.

Resolution New You #21 - Start to Brand Yourself.

What happens when the children start growing up and start moving out?  You've raised them to be self-sufficient human beings who can do it on their own.  They don't need you anymore. (Excuse me while I wipe away my tears.) What are you going to do then?
Many of my college friends graduated with a degree and the intent to become the next great teacher, acclaimed artist, or respected doctor.   While the intent was feasible, other events occurred, namely marriage and parenthood.  In exchange for climbing a corporate ladder, they chose to be a stay-at-home mom.   Instead of joining the workforce to teach others, they stayed home to teach, heal, and create with their own children.  I will say they, and I, have been blessed.
But in this day and age, it is important to create a distinctive, marketable role for yourself, just in case you have to reenter the workforce.  So, to be clear, start branding yourself now before the kids move out.  Just becuase you haven't received a paycheck, doesn't mean you haven't been working and acquiring valued skills. If you organize and throw great parties - take pictures, and document the planning process.  If you are a volunteer with your childs PTA, consider that a job and put your responsibilities on your resume.  If you are a board member with your association, what did you accomplish?
The trick is, find an expertise and identity that will make you valuable. You can also do this by taking online courses, or getting certified annually in courses of interest to you.  Find what you love to do and set yourself up to become an expert at it.  But do it now and plan it out.
I have heard we should update our resumes every year with a new skill.  Using the new online website, Linkedin, makes this easier than before.  And sometimes knowing what NOT to do, helps us confirm what we should do.  Look at these tips of how NOT to brand yourself.
Letters of recommendation are a must as well.  In the pharmaceutical industry, if you don't have a brag book at least 2 1/2 inches thick, you better know somebody in the business. When you accomplish something for someone or for a group, ask them for a letter stating what you did. Do not be humble or shy.  Be proud.  Be you.  Be proud of you.

Resolution New You #20 - Journal it. You could be the next Stephenie Meyer

We are not vampires.  Our time passes by so quickly, and if we don't write down some of the memories - we'll be to old to remember.  So start journaling now.  Sometimes a thought comes to you that you aren't sure what it means.  Out gut instinct tells us it is something important but we usually let daily activities occupy and take over our ideas.  Luckily that is not the case with Stephenie Meyer, author of The Twilight Series.  She had a dream about our beloved vampire, Edward (pictured left).  She woke up and started to write it down.
Your ideas and journal entries might not turn into a major motion picture, but to your kids, you are the creator, producer, director, editor, and star of their movie.  There are times when our kids just overwhelm us with love.  The things they say, how quickly they learn, how full our hearts feel just because of the way they giggled when they see something ordinary to us, but new and exciting to them.  Record those emotions.  Keep your journal in your purse, in your car, and write it down.   I guarantee they will want to know about it when they are older, for you are their biggest fan.
If you take a lot of vacations or enjoy traveling, there are two ways to journal your trip.  First the old-fashion way is to journal it.  For two centuries, legendary artists, writers, intellectuals, and travelers have used the brandname journals titled, Moleskine.  My favorite are the Moleskine City Books.  With almost 40 different cities to choose from, these are a great gift to give to a future traveler. The second way is to photo-journal your vacation.  Have you seen the the latest version of iPhoto?  It incorporates a new  technology called GPS - Geo-tagging. GPS Geotagging is the process whereby GPS coordinates are used to tag digital photographs in a way that identifies the location where the photograph was taken. Check out the latest demo from Apple to see how iPhone users and photographers can make journaling easier than ever.  Facebook users will want to see this as well.
Speaking of Facebook, it could be considered a journaling method as well.  One friend uploaded a picture of her son's homework assignment in which he used inappropriate words to fill in the blanks. How many times have your kids brought home a homework assignment that made you laugh. Journal it and record the memory.

Resolution New You #19 - Have your eyes checked

A very special person to me was complaining of frequent headaches for over a year.  Many of us told her it was just her diet and she probably had an allergy to something. We assured her, if she watched what she ate, started exercising, and relaxed a little, her headaches would go away.  (Mind you, none of us are doctors.  We are just the typical internet and health magazine article PhD's.)  Luckily, she was blessed with a friend who took action and made her go to the eye doctor.  The friends diagnosis was, bad vision is definately causing this and you need to get glasses.  When the real cause for the headaches was determined by an eye doctor, those of us closest to her where awakened to how precious our lives are. For what she had, was not an allergy, stress, or poor vision.  She had a tumor in the middle of her brain.  The tumor completely entangled her left optic nerve causing her vision to be weakened.  A normally round and healthy hypothalmus gland was flattened like a quarter.  The reason for her headache was, a meningioma.
She was scared.  At the young age of 40, she couldn't believe it happened to her, especially since she still was raising her 3 boys, one of which was just 2 years old.   As sad and frightened as she was, her courage and strength prevailed.  She was scheduled for brain surgery a few weeks after the diagnosis at the USC Medical Center.  Dr. Lui performed the miracle of removing the tumor from the exact center of her brain.  After a 7 hour surgery (originally forecasted to be a 3 hour surgery), Caroline awoke.  Her first words were, "Diet Coke."
Although she is legally blind in her left eye during this recovery time, she is alive and here with us. We pray that her eyesight will be restored within the next two years and she can live in the same manner before her surgery.  Until then, I am so thankful to this day for the friend of hers that made her go to the eye doctor.  She saved her life - and kept our precious hermana y amiga, here with us to raise her boys.

Resolution New You #18 - Grow your own food

"With just one square-foot garden, anyone can cut their food bills, eat better, and reduce their carbon footprint," says Mel Bartholomew.  Plus it's a fun chore for the kids,  reports a recent paper by a Rutgers nutritionist which stated, "gardeners, especially children - become so enthusiastic about their crops that they ate more vegetables and less junk food."
So how do you know what to plant and when? Visit Gardening How To, for the latest tips and tricks.  Enter to win a complete set of gardening tools to get you started.   Starting small is the key.  Make it a family project on the weekend where each of you get a pot to grow what you would like.  Dads dig the holes, moms arrange the seeds, kids water it down - family eats fresh herbs, fruit and veggies for the rest of the year.  You can't beat that for a better new you.  What are some of your favorite things to grow?

Resolution New You #17 - Volunteer your time

Now that Tivo exists, we are no longer tied to the broadcasters schedule of when to watch a show.  So that extra hour you receive, volunteer it to someone who really needs your help.
Starbucks has a new program titled, PLEDGE 5. What if you gave 5 hours to help your community? What if we all did?  If you join the call for national service and pledge 5 volunteer hours between today and January 25th, you will receive a complimentary coffee from Starbucks.  Not to mention the hugs and smiles from the people you helped.  Don't know what to help out with?  Simply enter your zipcode and a list of community events and services appear.  It really is that easy. For a little inspirational video, see the Are you in? video on YouTube.

Resolution New You #16 - Give yourself a makeover

Is it a compliment when the friends who haven't seen you in 20 years say, "you haven't changed a bit?" or "you look exactly the same!"  I suppose it could be depending how old you were when they last saw you.  A 60-year-old would love to be told she still looked 40, but a 40-year-old woman, might not want to look 20 anymore.  Her skin, yes, but everything else should be madeover to go with all she has learned and become.
So in 2009, a resolution to be a better new you is to get a makeover, and have fun with it.  Go to Nordstrom and talk with their personal shoppers.  They can update your wardrobe with a few classics and trendy pieces you need.
You can try a new haircolor.  There is a fabulous website offered by iVillage. Simply upload a picture of yourself with your hair pulled back. Then find the shape that best suits your face, and choose the hair color with over 1000 styles to choose from.  You can save each image of your new style and print out to show your friends.  This is a great way, versus going to a wig shop, to try a new look or style.  The website is so detailed, it lets you add makeup, and it adjusts perfectly to the size of your eyes and lips.  Then once you find that new look, bring it to your stylist and become a new you! It is so fun, you have to try.

Resolution New You #15 - Prepare your Legacy

It is time to finally get a family trust or will for you and your family. You will have peace of mind that your loved ones, your property, and your assets you have worked so hard for, are protected.
If you have property or value for anything in your life you do not want to see go to the IRS, get a living trust.  Many people do not know the difference between a will and a living trust but one of the contributing factors in determining which is right for you will be a term called probate. If you establish a will, upon your death, your estate will go into probate - the official proving of a will. (This is the court administered process of dividing up one's assets in an "orderly" fashion. Most often this is an "orderly" process costs your estate time, money, and makes your estate a public record.)
A living trust on the other hand eliminates probate.  A living trust is actually a pretty straightforward device. It is simply a separate entity (analogous to a corporation) which holds your assets. You retain complete control over your assets while you are alive and mentally competent. Upon your incapacity or death another person (called the "trustee") steps into your shoes and manages your assets for you. This trustee can be a relative, a friend, or a professional fiduciary (like a bank). Avoiding the probate process is critical, as your trustee can distribute your assets in an expedient manner to your heirs.
After you have learned all there is to learn about which is right for you and your financial circumstances at http://www.californiaprobate.info/willtrust.htm, start gathering your assets, talk to a family member or friend about the future of your children, and protect your legacies.
An attorney can handle your arrangements, or you can try LegalZoom, which is an online service I find to be extremely professional and informative.

Resolution New You #14 - Take a class

No matter how one may think himself accomplished, when he sets out to learn a new language, science, or the bicycle, he has entered a new realm as truly as if he were a child newly born into the world.  ~Frances Willard, How I Learned to Ride the Bicycle
Following are a list of classes you can take that will make you a better New You in 2009!
Tennis
Golf

Photography
Quilting

No excuses.  Just do it.

Resolution New You #13 - Make a New Recipe

They say variety is the spice of life.  I think this statement usually applies to The Bachelor or a bachelors mindset.  In this blog, I am referring to spicing up your weekly dinner plans for a better new you.  Hopefully you have some staples in your repertoire of dinners that your spouse enjoys, such as, tacos, spaghetti, meatloaf - don't replace those.  Men like their favorite foods.   Simply, add a new meal to the mix.  With the internet, it is easier than ever to get a last minute recipe. But if you plan ahead you can turn it into a date night.  On this blog, 30 days of..., you can find quick recipes guaranteed to make your hubby happy. New Recipes will be posted in February 2009. Until then here is a recipe that is quick and easy, and delicious.

Baby Back Ribs
One pack of Baby Back Ribs (pork)
KC Masterpiece BBQ Sauce (or his favorite BBQ sauce)
1 can beer
Put the baby back ribs into a crock pot FROZEN.
Add the beer and 1/2 bottle of the BBQ sauce.
Cook on Low (7-8 hours before you plan to eat.)

Resolution New You #12 - Make it personal

These days many of us communicate via email, Facebook, or my favorite,  texts. However, you can't hear a laugh, see a smile, or feel a hug with electronic communication. The smiley face icon, the multiple exclamation points, and the electronic greeting card just doesn't compare to the real deal.  To be a better you in the new year, make your communication more personal - send a card, pick up the telephone, schedule a lunch. It will make a difference to the person receiving it and you will feel good about what you did. Also, get in the habit of sending out greeting cards again.  To the right is a "special occasion book."  You can fill the book at the beginning of every year with cards for the people you want to remember - available at Hallmark Stores.

Resolution New You #11 - Know your cholesterol

Do you know your cholesterol levels?  Do you know how cholesterol affects your health?  Take this brief 10-question quiz provided by the American Red Cross and see how much you know. I learned I didn't know much.  Products that come from animals, including fatty red meat, egg yolks, butter, cheese, and whole milk, are foods that are high in cholesterol. There are also foods that are high in saturated fats and trans fat, which can also raise your level of LDL (bad) cholesterol such as muffins, and other processed baked goods.
In a way, they have a similar effect on your body as eating things that are high in cholesterol.  What happens to our arteries is simulated in the image to the left which is known as atherosclerosis. When too much LDL (bad) cholesterol circulates in the blood, it can slowly build up in the inner walls of the arteries that feed the heart and brain. Together with other substances, it can form plaque, a thick, hard deposit that can narrow the arteries and
make them less flexible.  If a clot forms and blocks a narrowed artery, a heart attack or stroke can result.
If the above picture doesn't make you want to give up the meat, baked goods and dairy in your diet, then watch this hysterical video to see how the eggs feel about you eating them.
